Episode Transcript: Ugh From SpongePedia, the biggest SpongeBob-wiki in the world!

squidward house

The first episode to focus on Squidward's low health is "Jellyfishing." After getting a jellyfish caught in his mouth from laughing too hard and not paying attention to the road while riding his bike, he falls down a cliff and is severely injured. His whole body is covered in bandages the next day and he has to use a motorized wheelchair. His torment continues through Patrick blowing hot soup in his face and lodging a jellyfish net through Squidward's bandaged tentacle, adding insult to injury.

Characters

At noon, SpongeBob and Patrick return to Squidward to tell him that they are almost done with their task, and SpongeBob accidentally shoots paint on Squidward's face and in his eyes. Squidward runs outside, screaming in pain, and is almost hit by a car that Debbie Rechid and Ralph turn out to be driving. They think Squidward is sick with chickenpox and take him to the hospital, ignoring his protests. His constant absences from the house on Muirfield Road proved too much for his wife, who finally left him. After producing a number of other pictures over the next several years, including the now classic The Front Page (1931) and Scarface (1932), Hughes lost interest in films and began devoting his full attention to flying. As he had with his previous ventures, he threw himself into aeronautics in a big way.

Notable SpongeBob Houses

Another significant home we see in SpongeBob SquarePants is the anchor where Mr. Krabs and Pearl live. The first floor features the living room, and only Mr. Krabs would have a vending machine to try and make money off his guests. I don’t think I could live under a rock, figuratively or literally.

His most enduring romantic liaison during this period was with Katharine Hepburn, with whom he shared a passion for flying and golf, and the pair could often be seen stepping through the gate at the rear of Hughes's house to play an impromptu round on the adjacent links. The scene is a big, rambling, hacienda-style house under construction directly across from the ninth green of Los Angeles's Wilshire Country Club. Suddenly, the scene is interrupted by a flashy red sports car barreling down the entrance drive and crashing into the ornate wooden gates leading to the motor court. Apocryphal though it may be, the story does manage to capture the spirit of what we have come to know about the young Hughes—bold, impetuous, erratic, with a manifest brilliance.

Gary the Snail

It is situated adjacent to Squidward Tentacles' house on Conch Street in the city of Bikini Bottom. The only living creatures in the house are SpongeBob SquarePants and Gary the Snail. SpongeBob's house is next to Squidward's house and two houses away from Patrick Star's rock. The inside is very colorful and has various major themes, but it mainly looks like a beach house.

He has a cynical attitude, a grandiose sense of self, and sees others as uncivilized morons while failing to accept his shortcomings. He often believes that Patrick and SpongeBob are morons due to their annoying behavior. Squidward sees himself as misunderstood and unappreciated, blaming society for his failures.

In "Fools in April," Squidward pulls a very cruel and harmful prank on SpongeBob that physically assaults him while under the manipulation of a rope tied to him, though he would apologize at the end of the episode. In "Suction Cup Symphony," Squidward kicks SpongeBob and Patrick out of his window so hard to the point of fracturing the latter's buttock bones. Although Squidward tried to make the last hours of SpongeBob's life meaningful and felt guilty for causing his doom, he expresses anger upon discovering that SpongeBob never actually ate the pie. In "The Lost Mattress," Squidward tries to get SpongeBob and Patrick eaten by the guard worm at the dump by having them trespass the fence while dressed up in steak suits. In "The Curse of Bikini Bottom," Squidward lends his lawnmower to SpongeBob and Patrick out of hope that they injure themselves with it. In "Sportz?," he creates a malicious sports game for them to play in an attempt to harm them and they both fell for it hurting themselves for the game.

FAQs about the SpongeBob House Guide

We also occasionally see where SpongeBob’s driving instructor, Mrs. Puff, lives. She has what looks like a lot of other houses in Bikini Bottom, but hers is pink. Sandy has two doors to get in so that she can drain the water from the outer door.

squidward house

In "The Thing," Squidward gets cement dumped onto him by a truck and has his entire body covered with it, once again preventing him from speaking. In "Krusty Towers," Squidward is left hospitalized in bandages along with SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs after a fight that broke out in the hotel which caused it to collapse which causes Mr. Krabs to regret making it. In "I Was a Teenage Gary," Squidward accidentally gets injected with the snail plasma while swarming through the junk pile in his house created by Snail-SpongeBob. He is turned into a snail at the end as he’s shown singing on the fence with Gary and Snail-SpongeBob. Despite his grouchy nature, Squidward does have a caring heart deep down, and when he realizes his plans have caused either harm or emotional pain to those he ridiculed, he is quick to realize the error of his ways and make up for it while he can. Occasionally, such as in "Krab Borg," Squidward is seen teaming up with SpongeBob, or even caring about him.

In the episode “Frankendoodle,” we meet DoodleBob, who starts as a drawing. But then he becomes evil and tortures SpongeBob for much of his time on screen. Squidward's bathroom's location is inconsistent, sometimes appearing on the first floor and other times on the second. There is a blue toilet, and a bathtub and shower with pink curtains. The sink is shaped like a clam and has a medicine cabinet above it. The first floor of Squidward's house contains a living room with green wallpaper and a pink tiled floor.

This is the final blow to Squidward as he angrily forces SpongeBob and Patrick to leave, telling them never to bother him again. By the time Hughes and his wife were ensconced in their home early in 1928, he was already deeply immersed in the planning of a film project more ambitious than anything he, or anyone else, had yet attempted. The project was Hell's Angels, a film that combined Hughes's interest in filmmaking with his growing passion for airplanes. For more than two years Hughes labored on Hell's Angels, often working 24-and sometimes 36-hour stretches at a time. His constant absences from the house on Muirfield Road proved too much for his wife, who finally left him and returned to Houston in October 1928, filing for divorce the next year.

The second version appears in "Employee of the Month" and "Funny Pants." Squidward with his real-life octopus counterpart, as seen in the book Underwater Friends. He is a very cynical, selfish, sassy, introverted (as he stated himself), and a stick-in-the-mud individual. He works as the cashier at the Krusty Krab, a job he usually hates, most likely due to SpongeBob's annoyance and Mr. Krabs' cheapness.

In some episodes, like I Was a Teenage Gary, it was shown that SpongeBob still needs a key to open the house. The house has flowers that represent his spice garden on each side and a pathway with rocks that leads to his house. In the episode Krabby Road, he has a garage where SpongeBob and his band practice.

In "Scavenger Pants," Squidward makes up a really difficult scavenger hunt in hopes of getting SpongeBob and Patrick harmed. In "Gary's Got Legs" and "Broken Alarm," Squidward is excited by the thought of SpongeBob's death. Squidward J. Q. Tentacles[4] ( /ˈskwɪd.wərd/,[5] /ˈskwɛd.wərd/) is a fictional character voiced by actor Rodger Bumpass in the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants.

Only octopuses (Squidward’s an octopus, not a squid) can get into the community. If you’ve seen the episode, you’ll know that it seems like paradise at first, and Squidward fits right in. One of the windows is to Squidward’s bedroom, and the other is his gallery where he usually opens the window to practice his clarinet. The house looks very similar to the main pineapple, but it’s not as detailed. It’s also black and white rather than the colorful orange and green that SpongeBob’s house is.

The Laugh Factory is one of the more notable clubs that hosts celebrity comedians. Known for its iconic neon sign on the Sunset Strip, this high-profile haunt is rated the "#1 Comedy club in the country" by USA Today. Similarly, The Comedy Store, founded by comedian Sammy Shore (Elvis Presley's opening act), his wife Mitzi, and comedy writer Rudy DeLuca in 1972, is a favorite tourist club. Inside, the Original Room stage is considered one of the best rooms in the country, hosting former performers like David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Jim Carrey.

INTENSE HAUNTED EXPERIENCE

At The Japanese Garden in the San Fernando Valley, you can sit and meditate or stroll among the waterfalls, lakes and streams, abundant greenery, and stone-carved lanterns. This quiet space represents a traditional Japanese Chisen-Kaiyushiki style (“a wet garden with a promenade") and can be visited Monday through Thursday by reservation only. This park also hosts various programs, like a junior ranger program, and holds free concerts and a farmer's and flea market. Weird, wonderful, and totally Los Angeles, Venice Beach is where you'll find a full-on scene in Southern California. Even the graffiti here is larger than life—and the people-watching is top shelf. On the boardwalk, you'll encounter fortunetellers, artists, hawkers, and street performers mixing with rollerbladers in thong bikinis.

Similarly, The Broad contemporary art museum's innovative “veil-and-vault” architectural design will stop you in your tracks. This "lending museum" houses works that go out on loan to museums around the world. Kids and science buffs will love the Natural History Museum's Spider Pavilion, Dinosaur Hall, and outdoor nature gardens.

This pass can also be purchased at customer service with proof of purchase of original ticket. If you need a break from shopping, dining, and walking about the city streets, take a load off in one of Los Angeles' city parks. Echo Park Lake, located in a historic neighborhood in East LA, was once a drinking water reservoir that has turned into a fishing and boating oasis. Here, you can take a walk on the path surrounding the lake, chill out on the lawn and have a picnic, or rent a pedal boat for a cruise around the lake. Everyone enjoys a vicarious peek at the rich and famous, and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills delivers an eye-popping dose of it.

We’ve seen movies aplenty in which a deeply flawed protagonist, someone we’d pretty much given up hope on, has a stirring of conscience or change of heart and puts his immediate interests at risk for the sake of something bigger. Directed by Elijah Moshinsky, the production compels you to listen, to drink in the unraveling of the incestuous horror, the small-town hypocrisy and the ghosts. The experience is not easy viewing for the sound-bite crowd, but it is alive, never ponderous, never solemn. For the diehard House of Torment fan, the popular weekend, “Enter the Blackout experience” event, in which guests attempt to escape the venue in complete darkness, is set for November 10-11. New adventures await at Mindspark at House of Torment with all new “Escape The Room” games, and the “Scare Store” gift shop will feature 2017 special edition Halloween merchandise.

Los Angeles County contains miles of beaches—all of them open to the public, whether you want to lounge and read a book, surf, or practice yoga. Here you'll find stretches of shoreline lined with volleyball nets, quiet and serene spots, and places to grab a meal or drink with sand in between your toes. Every few miles, a pier juts out into the ocean, (the most notable being the 920-foot pier at Balboa Beach—voted Orange County's best), making conditions perfect for surfers or those wanting a bird's eye view of the coast. It's likely clear to everyone who has listened that "The Tortured Poets Department" is an album written almost exclusively with a fountain pen. "When I was writing the 'Fortnight' music video, I wanted to show you the worlds I saw in my head that served as the backdrop for making this music," Swift wrote on social media. Normally, the warm scent of batter and thick syrup is the smell of home.

Each year, the draw of Hollywood lures young wannabe actors to the City of Angles. And, even with the growing competition of film hot spots—think New York and New Orleans—Los Angeles is still a major hub for moviegoers. The DTLA Film Festival in September showcases independent films with an emphasis on diversity. LA Film Festivals feature everything from animated movies to comedies and from sci-fi to horror movies. Most visitors to this section of town enjoy window-shopping at designer stores, including Bijan—rumored to be the world's most expensive store in the world—Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. You can also take a Beverly Hills trolley tour, an excursion that takes you down Rodeo Drive, and gives you a peek at nearby neighborhoods, celebrities' former homes, and famous landmarks.

When Swift first announced that her 11th studio album was called "The Tortured Poets Department," comparisons between the name and that of the film released in 1989 (famously the same year Swift was born) were made. Swift once explained that she mentally categorizes her songs into three categories based on the kind of pen she imagines writing them with quill pen lyrics, fountain pen lyrics, and glitter gel pen lyrics. When we first see Swift in the "Fortnight" video, she is styled to resemble a 1920s screen siren with her thin, drawn-on eyebrows and bobby-pinned hair. She's also wearing a ribbon choker, a popular trend among flapper girls of the 1920s. Malone, meanwhile, plays what Swift has called the music video's "tortured tragic hero," who hides his and Swift's past relationship as he shares her torment.

Now surrounded by the city, this one-stop food market delivers meat, poultry and dairy items, produce, baked goods, spices, and desserts. It also houses several sit-down restaurants, for those looking to sample anything from American to French to Brazilian cuisine. Lastly, the market contains shops that sell housewares, clothing, jewelry, and magazines and books. Attend a fall harvest festival here, or stop by Friday evenings to hear live music from local bands.

It's only a few blocks stroll to the remnants of the old waterways, designed by the developer Abbot Kinney (to replicate the canal-lined Italian city it was named for) and complete with pastel houses and arched bridges. Head to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for boutique shopping and artisan restaurants. That said, in Los Angeles, much of the hype centers around Hollywood Boulevard and its intersection with Highland Boulevard. Ever since Sid Grauman built his first movie houses and asked his famed friends to imprint their hands and feet in wet cement outside his Chinese Theatre, the area has been the site of a film fan frenzy.

Along the boulevard, you'll find the Walk of Fame, a series of stars embedded in the sidewalk, celebrating hundreds of personal achievements in film, television, and music. Celebrity impersonators prowl the sidewalks, posing for photos with passersby (for a small fee). And if you're lucky, you might get to witness a footprint ceremony, star ceremony, or movie premiere while there. Six Flags Magic Mountain is the place to go to get your roller coaster on. The coaster called "Goliath" starts with a 255-foot drop into a dark tunnel at 85 miles per hour.

However, if an intimate setting is more your jam, visit the Hotel Cafe to see acoustic performers who are new on the scene. Griffith Park, home to the Griffith Observatory and a state-of-the-art planetarium, is the largest municipal park in Los Angeles, spanning 4,210 acres of protected mountains and canyons. Inside the observatory, you can attend a show at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, check out the sun through a solar telescope, and enjoy guided talks. Come nightfall, retire to the roof and lawn of the observatory to see the night sky through one of the many public telescopes. Sunset Boulevard runs from downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean and travels through Los Angeles' exclusive neighborhoods. Its most famous stretch is called "The Sunset Strip," a section whose sexy curves, lined with nightclubs and emblematic billboards, make it a visual icon.

As you watch the eerie series, you might have questions about the characters, including who is dead, alive (or immortal). To help you out, here’s our spooky guide to the main cast of Dead Boy Detectives and where you might recognize the actors from. Set in the same universe as DC Comics’ The Sandman, the series follows the ghosts of Charles and Edwin, two boys who suffered terrible deaths at a British boarding school 70 years apart. Together, their ghosts solve supernatural mysteries that no one else can, but not without the help of psychic Crystal and her neighbor Niko. It is a reference to Swift's heartbreak ballad "The Story Of Us" from her 2010 album, "Speak Now."

"My friends used to play a game where we would pick a decade we wished we could live in instead of this/ I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists and getting married off for the highest bid." As the blog Million Graves noted, wearing black "allowed our ancestors to let the world know that grief was in their hearts without them having to say a word." After we see her dressed as a bride, Swift walks through a door and into an office where she's dressed in a Victorian-esque mourning dress. This change reflects the song's message about losing a great love and being unable to move on.

Residents and guests can also enjoy some games in the main part of the rest home. However, when he heads to work, other creatures pick on him for his big kiss from his granny. When SpongeBob tells his grandma to start treating him like an adult, he still visits. However, I think the house is very fitting based on the two octopuses’ relationship. Squilliam always has to upstage Squidward, and that includes having a bigger, more extravagant house. In the episode “Squidville,” Squidward gets fed up with living between SpongeBob and Patrick.

SpongeBob tries once again to apologize for earlier, but Squidward ignores him and furiously shoos and kicked them out. They look forward to cleaning up Bikini Bottom together and say that they will see him again next Sunday, which makes Squidward twitch with rage as he becomes increasingly livid, as the episode ends. While Squidward is cooking, SpongeBob steals his vacuum cleaner in order for him come to the pineapple to get it back.

Of course, we get to see SpongeBob’s house a lot, but we also see where other characters live. Whether you’re new to the show or a longtime fan, consider the different houses. I love SpongeBob’s pineapple house because I love pineapples, and the house is bigger than it looks. Squidward's house's mouth is the door, but originally, its mouth was closed and a door rested underneath it. The house's exterior styling is reminiscent of a "Moai," giant statues found on Easter Island, Chile, also referred to as the Easter Island Heads. The Insider's Guide to SpongeBob SquarePants, Squidward's house was built out of volcanic rock.

Artistic side

In "Can You Spare a Dime?" When Squidward went homeless after quitting his job, he mentions that no one would take his paintings so he had to eat them. However, in "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" he has shown to make good art in some artistic mediums, including wax-sculpting, pottery, and even paintings, but gets no recognition for them. Despite his lack of success, Squidward is tireless in his pursuit of artistic achievement.

Notable SpongeBob Houses

In "Best Day Ever," he had a concert where he played beautifully and received thunderous applause from the audience. SpongeBob was on the VIP list for it, which is ironic, considering Squidward's intense hatred for him. Squidward also misses many chances to become famous, even in his dreams.

Squidward is revealed to have an addiction to Krabby Patties in "Just One Bite," but he only pretended to hate them because he was embarrassed of SpongeBob finding out he likes them. His obsession with the burgers is so extreme to the point where he even eats the one he buried that's covered in sand, and resorts to eating a half-eaten patty thrown away in the garbage before SpongeBob cremates it. Squidward's withdrawal from Krabby Patties causes him to have a dream that night about marrying one and even having an octopus-burger hybrid child with it. Once Squidward confesses to SpongeBob that he loves Krabby Patties, Squidward impulsively eats as many of them in the patty vault to his heart's content, but this causes him to bloat severely with the burgers going to his thighs. As a final result, Squidward's body blows up, leaving only his head intact, which is sent to an ambulance. Squidward has a reputation of being on the receiving end of injuries and bad luck as part of his miserable life.

Let’s take a look at them to see where the various sea creatures live. SpongeBob SquarePants is one of my favorite shows, and I still like watching it as an adult. As I’ve rewatched it, I’ve noticed some new details about the houses to share in a SpongeBob house guide.

Whenever he walks, his suction cups stick to the floor, meaning that he walks with a distinct squelching noise. He also has a nasal voice, a skinny body, a big droopy nose, a wide mouth, and yellow eyes with rectangular maroon irises. When he laughs, his nose appears to deflate and inflate repeatedly (in earlier episodes, this was accompanied by a sound effect.) He wears a brown shirt.

At the end of the episode, the bandages break off, which seems to have cured him, but the Queen Jellyfish from earlier floats above his head, implying a worse injury will come. I wanted to include houses from the main characters as well as some supporting Bikini Bottom residents. Many background fish have the same style of house, but the main characters’ homes stick out.

SpongeBob’s bedroom is on the third floor and so is the library, but a part of the library is on the second floor. In the TV movie “Truth or Square,” the pineapple falls from a ship, then SpongeBob converts the fruit into a house. Despite how it looks on the outside, the house has multiple floors. But I’d probably live in Squidward’s house if I had to choose since it has the most practical design. Either way, consider some of the most famous houses from this nautical cartoon. Squidward's art studio has many of his paintings, self portraits, statues, and other works of art.

Unlike SpongeBob, He is much more down of his greedy and cheap nature. He also thinks very lowly of Squidward and gets tired of his lazy tendencies and often frames him for mishaps, though he does see him as a valued employee on occasion. There, have been many times where Squidward angrily berated Mr. Krabs. In "Born Again Krabs," he furiously chastises Mr. Krabs for selling SpongeBob's soul for pocket change. In "Clams" he gets mad at Krabs for taking them on a fishing trip and berates him for making them stay on the boat all over a dollar. However, their relationship has taken a turn for the worst as the series progressed, with Mr. Krabs becoming greedier and more immoral, and Squidward becoming angrier and grouchier.

The house then grows arms and legs and walks away with SpongeBob and Patrick still inside. Satisfied by this, Squidward, despite only having a half-hour of relaxing time left, then realizes that they can now no longer bother him and as such, he reassures himself that he's going to relax—even if it kills him. Meanwhile, Squidward's house rampages through downtown Bikini Bottom, and SpongeBob and Patrick turn the security system off just as the house returns to its original position, causing it to fall on top of Squidward. Squidward's Sunday relaxation time is now over, and he calmly tells them that he only wanted to enjoy his day off, and he has SpongeBob and Patrick leave so that he can get ready for work the next day.

Squidward laughed at Gary's crash in "The Great Snail Race," making it hard to deduct Squidward's real feelings for Gary. He also got mad at him in episodes like "Once Bitten" or "Chatterbox Gary." In "Swimming Fools" Gary tries to attack Squidward for trespassing in SpongeBob's pool in the middle of the night. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Squidward is the manager of the Krusty Krab 2 for six days, although due to Plankton's invasion of Bikini Bottom, the new restaurant is not in service during this time. It is also shown here that Squidward cares about what happens to the Krusty Krab and the Krabby Patty formula when he discovers Plankton selling Krabby Patties and threatens to report him to King Neptune. In "Selling Out," Squidward works as the waiter for Krabby O'Monday's.

It contains Squidward's canopy bed that Squidward sleeps, which has two tables next to it. The ground floor consists of three adjoining rooms; the one at the front being the living room. The living room consists of a bookcase with some of Squidward's jazz records, a couch, a coffee table, and TV. Behind the living room is the kitchen with a fridge, an island counter, and four cabinets.

Squidward usually lives alone, but in "The Great Snail Race," he adopts a pet snail named Snellie. In "Can You Spare a Dime?," Squidward winds up homeless after quitting his job until SpongeBob finds him living in a cardboard box and takes him into his house. Squidward almost becomes homeless again in "Giant Squidward," when he turns into a giant. In the episode "Good Neighbors," Squidward's house becomes a living robot (due to a security system) and terrorizes Bikini Bottom. This is also due to the fact that they often don’t see how annoying they are even when Squidward asks for piece and quiet. This is shown in "Jellyfishing" where Squidward unleashes a jellyfish in a jar with the intent to make it sting SpongeBob and Patrick, in retaliation for making him get stung by the Queen jellyfish.

Squidward does have artistic talent, but he’s just too lazy and arrogant to practice. His overall artistic style is shown to be abstract and overly sophisticated, and his works are commonly panned by his audiences. His failure is shown to be due to his bad taste and arrogance, rather than a genuine lack of talent as he thinks he is a good artist. The entirety of his art centers on himself, apparently holding his very being to be an artistic wonder and never even considers depicting anything else. In the episode "One Krabs Trash," Squidward is shown bringing flowers to a gravestone reading "Here Lies Squidward's Hopes and Dreams", with Mr. Krab's responding "What A Baby".

HOLLADAY, Utah (ABC4) — Hazmat and fire officials were at the scene of a planned detonation in Holladay on Tuesday night, where neighbors said there were reports of dynamite in a home. Another tornado hit an area on the eastern edge of Omaha, passing directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city's airport. Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said. She said the agency planned to send out multiple crews over the next several days to determine the number of tornadoes and their strength, and that it could take up to two weeks to finish the evaluation.

Columbia student protest organizers said Wednesday the university has conceded to some demands but is still putting students at risk of attacks. Rallies and encampments have sprung up on campuses from California to Massachusetts this week, sometimes prompting police intervention, as was the case Wednesday at the University of Texas in Austin and at the University of Southern California. The protesters are calling for an end to U.S. military support for Israel and for eliminating Israeli investments. Meanwhile, police arrested protesters Wednesday at the University of Southern California campus, which closed to the public Wednesday amid clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and authorities at the school and nationwide. The White House insisted Sunday that pro-Palestinian protests that have rocked U.S. universities in recent weeks must remain peaceful, after police arrested around 275 people on four separate campuses over the weekend. What Is A Cape Cod Style House? Cape Cod Architectural Style

'It’s also flexible in how it can be configured and beautiful for all of those reasons. According to Barry Goralnick, a New York-based designer who grew up surrounded by Cape Cod houses in Massachusetts, these smaller iterations have their perks. Despite having a timeless style, Capes have evolved over the years to a few different subcategories, says My Move. Originating in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the 17th CE, these houses are a stereotype for the perfect American Cottage that you have envisioned.

Plan: #196-1183

Or maybe you’re considering building elsewhere but crave quintessential New England charm? The typical Cape Cod house plan is modest in size, rectangular, symmetrical and accommodating to a variety of interior layouts. If you’re going to build a home you plan to stay in for the rest of your life, consider selecting a Cape Cod house plan that features the master suite on the main level, as this will make aging in place far easier. Windows play a big factor in creating the charm and efficiency of Cape Cod house plans. The rest of a Cape Cod style house’s exterior is pretty minimal in terms of ornamentation and usually boasts clapboard siding or wood shingles.

Defining elements and characteristics of a Cape Cod house

cape cod house

Upon a closer look, in addition to a shed-like front door shelter, rain and snow can be redirected away from the house by gutters and downspouts and window lintels. For the practical New Englander, architectural detail is often for very practical reasons. Though Cape Cod homes are known and loved for their simplicity, they were ultimately designed for colder, snowier climates — right down to their steep roofs.

How to find Cape Cod-style houses for sale in your area

From the bespoke versions put up by modern reproduction firms to custom builders throughout the region,  the style survives and thrives, sometimes in the most contemporary ways. ZeroEnergy Design, also in Boston, specializes in cutting-edge energy-efficient homes, often achieving net-zero buildings (making as much energy as they consume). Certainly, Cape Cods lend themselves to coastal elements inside, but they're just as easy to decorate in an eclectic, new traditional, or Scandi-inspired style. With a look that's both historic and understated, it's easy to find a design aesthetic that will be harmonious with a Cape Cod cottage. Though this historic style originated as far back as the late 17th century, it has experienced resurgences in popularity many times since then. While Cape Cods first started sprouting up in Massachusetts, they were common in most of New England by 1740.

Colonial Revival (1930s–1950s)

To get an accurate idea of how much the Cape Cod home of your dreams may cost, America's Best House Plans offers a Cost to Build Estimator. According to Home Edit, many Capes feature wood trim, but in more modern takes, it's bright white to contrast any other timeless pieces in the home. The outlet also notes that natural materials are the best to decorate with in Cape Cod homes, since it highlights those wood elements and brings the build back to its early roots. Unzipping through the interiors, hardwood flooring is a must specification in the Cape Cod homes. While choosing a color palette, it is always a smart move to go for a chic, subtle design shade that lets the light bounce away while making enough room for you to relax.

The modern day Cape Cod houses you see in nearly every part of North America are modeled after the rugged architecture of colonial New England. In the 1930s, the Depression and Colonial Revival combined to make Cape Cod-style homes regain popularity as an economical building style. In the 1940s and 1950s, Cape Cod homes were a widespread answer to the post-war housing boom. Even in supersized 21st-century America, Cape Cod-style homes retain a nostalgic popular appeal with new builds of all sizes, from sprawling homes to tiny houses inspired by the original Cape Cod architectural style. Traditionally, the space under the roof of a Cape Cod house wasn't used as a livable second story.

Cape Cod House Plans, Floor Plans & Designs

Cape Cod homes have an unfinished or partially opened crawl space underneath the house, more commonly lined with stone, brick or brick veneer, as specified. Adding nooks and cranny for storage purposes can really add a serious charm to the house. Meanwhile, in the interiors, the low-heightened ceilings and bold shutters account for heat conservation and blocking of harsh winter winds.

House Features

These homes were built to help house families and veterans returning from war. Like many of the style's other characteristics, Cape Cod homes typically feature neutral exterior color schemes. The original shake shingles are often left to weather gray, while other Cape Cod homes sport painted shingles. Most of the color schemes, like those of Colonial-style homes, are very neutral and austere. Patterned brickwork, diamond-paned windows, and a slate roof can give a 20th century Cape Cod the flavor of a Tudor Cottage home. At first glance, you might not think of this house as a Cape Cod—especially because of the brick exterior.

It's also common for many modern Cape Cods to have an attached or detached garage, front walkway, and back patio or porch. A Cape Cod-style house with an open-floor plan eliminates most non-structural walls to create an open and airy flow through the kitchen, dining area, and living room. If the homeowner chooses to add a wing or two and still retain the Cape Cod structure, they can extend a single-story off one or both sides of the home. Occasionally, such extensions may not be possible on a narrow lot, and the home can only be built up to add more living space. In keeping with a more traditional style, you can find floor plans with the front entry or foyer that opens onto a stairway, with a bedroom, study, or office on the right side and a formal living room on the left.

Modern Cape Cod interior design opts for a white color palette to add light to the home and create a larger feel in the space. Unlike Victorian homes popular in the early 20th century, Cape Cod homes are distinguished by their simple architectural designs. Because of their modest geometric forms, Cape Cod houses are particularly well-suited for additions. This Cape Cod home seems very traditional—no dormers, a center chimney, and not even any window shutters.

The Reverend Timothy Dwight IV (1752–1817), president of Yale University from 1795 to 1817, coined the term "Cape Cod house" after a visit to the Cape in 1800. Early Capes used wainscoting on the interior walls to prevent moisture from building up during humid Cape Cod summers. The living area is on the main floor, which consists of a living room, dining room, kitchen, and an optional bedroom. The homes are typically 1 or 1 1/2 stories, usually featuring low ceilings, although modern Capes have increased the ceiling height. Today, these homes can range from a traditional 3+2 to a luxury Cape Cod house with all the modern amenities. Wills did away with the functional interior and renovated it for 20th-century life while keeping the exterior features home buyers love, even today.

The half-Cape has a single, off-center door with two windows to one side. The layout usually centers around a large central fireplace and the common room or kitchen, with the bedrooms, pantries, parlor, and rear entry branched off the central kitchen. The style fell out of popularity temporarily but had a resurgence post World War ll, known as the Cape Cod Revival.

They feature similar rectangular floor plans, though they often include at least two stories. Aside from the square footage, colonial homes typically employ gambrel roofs—a main feature of Dutch colonials—while Cape Cod houses traditionally make use of gable roofs. Colonial houses may also include more ornamentation, like the use of columns, which is less common on traditional Cape Cod homes.

Traditionally, Cape Cod floor plans are symmetrical, with an equal number of windows on either side of the door. A three-quarter Cape has two windows on one side of the door and a single window on the other side of the door. Quite often, along with a full second-story expansion, today's Cape Cod homes will also feature a bonus space of some type, thereby increasing the square footage and flexibility of the house to suit the modern family. Additionally, the updated Cape Cod plans may have adopted the open floor plan layout to improve the traffic flow, livability, and efficiency of the home's interior. The exterior steep roofs are symbolic of a typical cape cod house that is designed solely for the purpose of minimizing the weight of the snow.

This style has become a quintessential American home whose practicality is outweighed only by its charm. Homeowners can also create a backyard living area without interfering with the Cape Cod home’s quaint, historic charm. You can find patios and decks in many Cape Cod backyards with comfortable furniture for entertaining friends and family. Winters can get cold in New England, so a fire pit would be a nice addition to enjoy the fall and winter seasons.
